- Packing is overwhelming, where should I begin?
Get a head start by packing items that you don’t use often. Be sure to label all boxes clearly to designate which room they belong to. Labeling the boxes will save everyone time once you get to your new place. Labels such as “fragile” and “this side up” are also useful in assuring proper handling.
- What types of boxes should I use?
Don’t try to pack too much in a box particularly if the items you are packing are heaving such as books or canned goods. Bulky items such as pans, small appliances and linens should be packed in larger boxes. Be sure to use special dish pack boxes for glass items and fragiles. Avoid packing more than 50lbs per box. Tape the bottom and top of each box with two strips of strong tape.
- What about clothes?
Folded clothes can be packed in large boxes. Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes to save time unpacking. Don’t forget to use your suitcases as packing space.
- Do I have to empty out my dresser drawers?
We recommend removing all contents of the dresser drawers in order to alleviate any extra strain on the furniture piece.
- How do I pack my china?
Dish pack boxes are recommended for packing china and fragile items. They are made of strong cardboard and often come with separators. To begin, line the bottom of the box with crushed packing paper, this will provide the first layer of protection for your fragile items. Wrap each item individually with packing paper. After wrapping the plates, we recommend wrapping the entire bundle for extra protection. After individually wrapping glasses, you may nest them inside each other. Wine glasses should be packed separately as singles. Fill any empty space in the box with crushed packing paper. When you are finished packing the box, give a little shake. You know you’ve done a good job if you do not hear anything rattling inside. Mark the box as “fragile”.
- Are there certain foods I can pack?
Open cartons such as milk should not be packed. Open dry containers and boxes such as cereals and spices should be sealed with tape. Perishables should be the last thing packed and the first to be unpacked. If going into storage, opened food boxes and containers should not be packed as they can attract insects.
- How do I pack table lamps and lamp shades?
Some moving supplies stores sell special lamp boxes although dish pack boxes may be used as well. To begin, line the bottom of the box with crushed paper to create a protective layer. Remove the lamp shade from the base and then wrap the cord around the base of the lamp (be sure to remove the light bulb and pack with fragiles). Protect the lamp base with packing paper and fill any empty space with packing paper. You can nest similar lamp shades together, however, do not pack anything else with the lamp shades as they can be crushed. Mark the box as “fragile”.
- How should I pack electronics such as stereos, TVs and computers?
Disconnect all cords and keep together with the electronic item. Use a sturdy box such as TV box or dish pack box. Line the bottom of the box with crushed paper. Place the electronic item(s) in the box, cover with considerable amount of crushed paper. Continue to fill the box in this manner. Fill any empty spaces with packing paper.
- Q. What shouldn’t I pack?
Aerosol cans, flammable items and any other items that have the potential to leak or explode should not be transported. If moving long distance, please check state guidelines for transporting weapons and alcohol. All gasoline must be removed from any lawn equipment.
